Project Manager - Fixed Term Contract 12 Months

As a key part of our Governance, Administration and Projects (GAP) Team you will work with Governance, Administration and Projects Consultants, in addition to Actuarial and Investment colleagues to develop and deliver first class advice to our clients, who are predominantly local authorities administering the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) but may also be Scheme Employers and Asset Pools. 

We currently have an exciting opportunity to join this department as a Project Manager, within our Public Sector Governance, Administration and Projects Team on a fixed term basis, in our Edinburgh or Glasgow Office.

We are open to considering candidates on a part time or full-time basis

What will your role look like?

We are seeking an experienced Project Manager to work within our Public Sector Governance, Administration and Projects (GAP) Team. The successful candidate will work with our public sector clients on a variety of different change projects and therefore play an integral part in ensuring the team delivers high quality, efficient services to a range of public sector clients.

Please note that this role may require you to undertake projects which may involve some travel away from home office.

Though this is a varied role, your key tasks will include:

  • Overarching responsibility for the  planning and ongoing management of a number of client projects of varying sizes, complexity and duration 
  • Working collaboratively with clients and other individuals within the Firm, to capture and agree the client/project requirements, define objectives, project scope, project budget and key milestones/deadlines. This will involve the effective facilitation of workshops and planning sessions with all key stakeholders 
  • Where necessary, work with clients to analyse and improve processes and then implement required changes
  • Working with clients and managing key stakeholders to establish and embed effective project governance and reporting requirements  
  • Managing key stakeholders and monitoring/implementing stakeholder management plans 
  • Create high quality, comprehensive project documentation appropriate to each stage of the project lifecycle 
  • Undertaking initial risk assessment, implementing mitigating actions and ensuring effective management of project risks and issues through to their conclusion 
  • Ongoing monitoring and maintenance of project plans, ensuring projects are delivered on time, on budget and within scope 
  • Chairing and effective facilitation of all project meetings at varying levels, from project teams through to Board meetings   
  • Use of appropriate change control processes to manage & verify change to project scope, schedule and/or budget 
  • Effective management of project budget, monitoring of actual spend and ensuring appropriate corrective action taken to manage overspend and/or increased scope 
  • Ability to adapt to and implement new processes / way of working to meet client requirements 
  • Providing support and input to the project management teams strategic objectives, including but not limited to supporting the Head of Public Sector Projects with client development and/or new business opportunities  
  • Mentoring and coaching of staff, including possible line management responsibilities 
  • Maintain a working knowledge of latest project management tools and techniques ensuring the implementation of industry best practice 
  • Attending relevant job-related training to ensure ongoing professional development  
  • Adhering to the firm’s Information security standards, policies and procedures 
  • Adhering to the firm’s professional and quality standards e.g. peer review process  
  • Acquiring and maintaining a solid understanding of the firm’s products and services 

To enjoy and succeed in this role, you will have:

  • Proven background in project management, preferably in a client facing role with an ability to develop and maintain strong client relationships
  • Project Management qualification: PRINCE II or equivalent and / or experience of managing projects using PRINCE methodology 
  • Experience of successfully managing multiple concurrent and complex projects  
  • Experience of using MS outlook, word, excel, PowerPoint and Project Management Tools. Experience of using SharePoint would be advantageous
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills with an ability to successfully influence clients and other key stakeholders across a range of levels 
  • Strong proactive management and organisational skills 
  • Experienced in and comfortable working in a fast-paced environment 
  • Experience in managing, developing and coaching individuals
  • Be flexible during high periods of activity and remain calm under pressure
  • Ability to prioritise work to successfully meet deadlines and effectively manage workloads, ensuring appropriate delegation 
  • Strong leadership skills with an ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team 
  • Excellent attention to detail with a high degree of accuracy 
  • Strong commercial and business awareness. Experience of working in financial services or in a client facing consultancy role would also be advantageous
